Temecula businesswoman gets funding through Kickstarter website
It sounds too good to be true: a website where you can ask people to asics running shoes help fund your startup dream. What’s even stranger is that sometimes, you get more money than you’ve requested. And it’s perfectly kosher.

To build a buzz for next month’s opening, create a marketing strategy and get financing, she turned to Kickstarter, where she set a 30 day deadline to raise $4,000.
The website is the largest of dozens of similar platforms devoted to “crowdfunding,” in which donors pledge money to jumpstart a venture. Each site has different rules, but on Kickstarters, inventors, artists and entrepreneurs set a fundraising time limit from one to 60 days and a dollar amount goal. Anyone can pitch in, but if the prescribed amount isn’t hit by the deadline, no money changes hands and the project is kaput.
Maffei is already home free. On February 1, two hours after she submitted her application and video, Kickstarter accepted her Artisan’s Palate project and proposal: 30 days to reach her goal of $4,000. As of Thursday, Feb. 21, with 16 days to go, 42 backers had pledged a total of $4,120 to Maffei’s Artisan Palate.
Since launching in 2009, Kickstarter has raised $323 million for projects. grabs another 3 to 5 percent for processing the payments. The money is usually taxed.

“Kickstarter isn’t meant to fund the whole thing for me,” said Maffei, who received pledges from $5 to $1,000, mostly from her social media network. At 1.82 million square feet, this is the largest building of its kind in the United States to receive this honor. The store is 26,000 square feet and includes low priced merchandise from thousands of designers and name brand vendors. The store will add 60 full and part time jobs.
